Indexkeeper

Google index checker: free and bulk options, and what each one can see

"Google index checker" covers three different kinds of tool. They answer different questions, so the right pick depends on whether the pages are yours and how many there are. This is a plain comparison of the kinds, not a ranking of brands (for brands and prices see IndexCheckr alternatives compared). Checked 2026-11-01.

Disclosure: we are building Indexkeeper, a Chrome extension of the second kind below. It is not released yet and not on the Chrome Web Store.

Kind 1: search-based checkers (any URL)

You paste a list of URLs, the tool asks Google whether each one appears and returns indexed / not indexed. They work for pages you do not control, such as backlinks, guest posts and client prospects. Limits: the answer is a snapshot from search results, which Google does not guarantee to be complete; it gives no reason why a page is missing; many free versions cap the list at a few dozen URLs per run.

Kind 2: Search Console based checkers (your own sites)

These read Google's own record of your pages through the URL Inspection API, so you get the exact state and the reason (for example Submitted and indexed, Crawled - currently not indexed, Excluded by 'noindex' tag), the last crawl and the canonical Google chose. Limits: only for properties you have access to, and Google caps the API at 2,000 inspections per property per day (limits). The free route is our index-check.py script (setup guide); the no-code route is an extension or web app.

Kind 3: one-off checkers in the browser

Small Chrome extensions and web forms that check the page you are on. Fast for a single URL; no history, so you cannot see when something changed.

Both run in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

What no index checker can do

Checking does not make Google index anything. If a page is not indexed, the reason in Search Console tells you what to change; see Crawled and Discovered. And an indexed page can still drop later, so for pages that matter, re-check on a schedule: how to find the ones that left.

Indexkeeper: the no-code version of this

A Chrome extension that re-checks your sitemap URLs through the same official API and alerts you when one drops out of Google's index. Free for 50 URLs; Pro $9/month. It is not on the Chrome Web Store yet: leave your email and we send one message when it is.

You're on the list. We'll email you once, when Indexkeeper is live.
