Compare two Google index exports: which pages dropped, which are new, which changed
Drop in two exports of the same site from different dates and see exactly which URLs left the list, which appeared, and which changed indexing status. Works with Search Console Pages report exports (the .zip or its Table.csv) and with the CSVs of our free index-check.py script.
Your files never leave your browser. The comparison runs in this page's script (tool.js, readable, no libraries): nothing is uploaded or stored.
Before (older export)
One or more .zip or .csv files from the earlier date.
or paste a CSV or a list of URLs
After (newer export)
The same exports from the later date.
or paste a CSV or a list of URLs
What it shows
| Result | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Changed status | The URL is in both exports with a different status, e.g. Submitted and indexed to Crawled - currently not indexed. Rows that lost indexing are listed first. For index-check.py CSVs a change of Google-selected canonical counts too. |
| Dropped | The URL was in the older export and is not in the newer one. In an export of indexed pages, that is a page that left the index (or a sample change, see below). |
| New | The URL is only in the newer export. |
The CSV download has one row per difference: change, url, before, after, before_canonical, after_canonical.
How to export from Search Console
- Open Indexing > Pages for the property. For indexed pages, click View data about indexed pages; for a reason, click it under Why pages aren't indexed (for example Crawled - currently not indexed or Discovered - currently not indexed).
- Click Export (top right) and choose Download CSV. You get a
.zip; drop the zip here as it is, or itsTable.csv. - Do the same on a later date (keep the old files; Search Console does not keep old lists for you).
A Search Console export has no status column: every URL in it has the status of the list you exported. The tool takes that status from the zip's metadata where it can, otherwise from the file name; type it into the status box next to the file if it is wrong. To see moves between statuses, add several exports per side (for example the indexed list and the "Crawled - currently not indexed" list of each date).
Limits of the exports: each list holds at most 1,000 example URLs, so on a large site a URL can "drop" from the list only because Google showed a different sample. Exporting the report overview (counts per reason) gives no URLs; the tool tells you so. For a complete, per-URL record, inspect your own URLs through the API (next section).
With index-check.py
Our free index-check.py inspects every sitemap URL through the URL Inspection API and writes index-YYYY-MM-DD.csv with url, verdict, coverageState, lastCrawlTime, googleCanonical, robotsTxtState. It already prints the changes since its previous run; drop any two of its CSVs here to compare runs weeks apart, or to get the changes as a table and a CSV. Setup: how to check if your pages are still indexed.
Want to know which sitemap URLs are missing from an indexed export (and which indexed pages are not in your sitemap)? Use the free sitemap URLs not indexed tool; its Send to Compare button puts the result here as the older file.
Indexkeeper is the Chrome extension we are building: it re-checks your sitemap URLs every day through Search Console's official URL Inspection API and alerts you the moment a page changes state, so you no longer export and compare by hand. Free for 50 URLs; Pro $9/month. It is not released yet (not on the Chrome Web Store); leave your email and we send one message when it is.
What to do with the result
- Lost indexing with
Excluded by 'noindex' tag, robots or a redirect: usually a change on your side, quick to fix (reasons table). - A batch moving to
Crawled - currently not indexed: a quality judgement, often after a core update; improve or merge those pages. - Canonical changed: Google now treats another URL as the main version; check duplicates and internal links.
